Case Studies

A transport of delight

A ground-breaking six year contract with one of Britain’s leading national transport utilities. The programme is the culmination of an 18-month process which examined in minute detail the best possible way to structure the insurance cover.

As a regulated utility, the client had particular and strictly-monitored funding parameters. These led to the identification of an overall strategy of reducing volatility and minimising cost. The client worked with their broker to develop their own pricing model, which was then refined by QBE on the basis of the most efficient and effective use of the client’s capital.

Numerous benefits were felt by the client, including:

  • Greater budget certainty
  • The release of substantial funds to group profit and loss
  • Certainty on their exposure to accumulated losses
  • Internal resource freed up to deliver better claims and insurance management
  • Improved risk management processes

All in all, the project was hailed by the client as a groundbreaking achievement, that delivered stability, continuity and a sense of partnership.

Serving up success

This client is one of the UK’s largest corporate caterers, with UK-wide operations serviced by a fleet of 2,400 vehicles. QBE has provided them with cover for a number of years. We recently completely overhauled the policies and procedures that we use to service their business.

We now provide them with an entirely bespoke cross-class package of covers which include:

  • Casualty: including employers’ liability and public liability
  • Property
  • Motor fleet

How to stop a car maker’s profits draining away..

Offering extended warranties is good business for manufacturers, dealers and drivers alike. But many insurers are not prepared to underwrite them across all models, to all dealers. However, once this manufacturer tapped into our breadth of knowledge and expertise, the deal was done very quickly.

How nightclub owners could have the power to lower their premiums..

Clubs represent a potent cocktail of potential risks. Many insurers don’t want to get involved. By scoring managers on their level of experience and training we can more accurately assess the liability, and set premiums more fairly.

"An example of our entrepreneurial approach to risk."

How a pharmaceutical company could have unshakeable cover..

In order to create groundbreaking drugs, all pharmaceutical companies need to know they have solid support from their insurance company. Finding cures doesn’t come easy and the possible pitfalls are all too calamitous. But this client now knows we have the expertise and flexibility to make their liability coverage watertight. Because unlike the competition, we were able to distinguish between known and unknown risks, and provide the liability insurance they needed.

"Another reason why we’re one of the UK’s leading insurers."

How one furniture manufacturer could become a prize catch..

Their chairs were desirable, but from an insurance perspective this well-known furniture company’s manufacturing processes weren’t. Dangerous tools, and concerns about product liability and product recall, were enough to make other insurers sit uncomfortably. But by bringing our healthy appetite for risk to the table, together with a few suggested security tweaks, we were delighted to be able to underwrite the policy.

How a catering company could reduce the cost of its deliveries..

This food supplier was having trouble insuring its drivers. Frozen shoulders were to blame – and we’re not talking cuts of lamb. After a little detective work, we found that the truck drivers weren’t sitting properly at the wheel. So we simply taught them how, and underwrote the policy.

"The creative ways to take on risk that others might reject."

How to help a valuable racehorse bounce back..

With a single animal worth many millions, owners need to know they have thoroughbred cover. When this one broke a leg, we immediately authorised cutting-edge veterinary procedures. And if these hadn’t worked, we would have paid up without any fuss.

"It’s all part of our dedication to keeping our clients satisfied."

How one power supplier could identify hidden threats..

The energy business is not for the faint-hearted, but when people are able to bluff, and hide a poor credit rating, it gets all the more precarious. Even a large supplier can be lied to. That’s why we developed CreditQube, an online service that enables you to accurately credit-check every company you’re considering working with – no matter what business you’re in.

"An example of our commitment to reducing risks."

How this airline specialist could avoid spiraling costs..

There’s nothing to touch their engines in the air. Unfortunately, no insurer would touch the machines that make them on the ground. That’s because during construction each turbine has to be left to set for six months. So the slightest fault could set things back a long way and be very costly indeed. However, through a rigorous analysis of the production process, we were able to minimise the chances of disruption and so underwrite the policy.

A way to manoeuvre this airline into a better position..

A well-known carrier was experiencing a high level of back complaints amongst their baggage handlers. When they called in our team, we discovered that over 60% of muscular skeletal disorders were the result of carrying heavy items. So we engaged a professional weightlifter to train staff in correct lifting technique. As a result back injuries dropped by a third.

"An example of how we empower our people to think for themselves and come up with creative solutions."

How to insure a bus fleet, without it becoming an epic production..

Our unique Ensign and MBP packages have made us experts in the highly specialised field of bus and coach fleet insurance. It’s one of the many areas that other insurers consider too daunting, but in which we can boast detailed, in-depth knowledge.

"We’re continually looking to add value and package cover more creatively."
